World Hunger Facts

  • Every eight seconds, a child dies from drinking contaminated water.
  • Food is always available for those who can afford it.  Starvation hits the poorest.
  • Hunger deaths from famine and war are given the most media coverage and publicity.  However, only 10 percent of hunger deaths result from famine and war.  The stark truth is that the vast majority of hunger deaths are not in the news we see and hear.  Hunger kills most people through chronic malnutrition.
  • Each year, more than 11 million children die from malnutrition before reaching the age of five.
  • 852 million people across the world are hungry, up from 842 million a year ago.
  • In the developing world, more than 1.2 billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less than $1 per day.
